Sweaney Custom Homes is a family-led luxury custom home builder serving Bakersfield, California’s Central Valley, and select Central Coast communities. Led by Principal and Master Builder Todd Sweaney, our approach brings experienced leadership and single-source accountability to every stage of the custom home journey.

We offer a different approach: one shared vision, one experienced team, and one accountable leader guiding the journey from land evaluation through completion.
Our Integrated Design-Build process brings planning, architecture, budgeting, engineering, selections, and construction together from the beginning. The result is better communication, better-informed decisions, fewer surprises, and greater confidence throughout the building experience.
As Director of Client Experience, Dana Sweaney guides homeowners through material and color selections and serves as a trusted advocate throughout the process. By intentionally limiting the number of homes we build, our Family Driven Culture allows us to provide the accessibility, responsiveness, and personal attention that define how we work.

You do not need to have every decision made before contacting us. Whether you are exploring the possibility of building, evaluating land, or ready to begin planning, Sweaney Custom Homes can help you understand the process and determine the appropriate next steps. Our goal is to bring clarity to the decisions ahead before significant commitments are made.
How early should I contact a custom home builder?
The earlier, the better—ideally before architectural design is substantially developed and, when possible, before purchasing land.
Involving a Master Builder early allows site conditions, design, constructibility, preliminary budgeting, and construction requirements to be considered together. This early collaboration can help identify potential challenges while options remain open and reduce costly redesign or changes later. Even if you are still considering land or developing ideas, Sweaney Custom Homes can help you understand the path from property evaluation and design through construction.
Do I need architectural plans before contacting a custom home builder?
No. Many of our clients contact Sweaney Custom Homes before architectural plans have been developed. In fact, early builder involvement allows site conditions, constructibility, preliminary budgeting, and construction considerations to inform the design as it develops.
If you already have an architect, we can collaborate with your existing design team. If you have not selected one, our Integrated Design-Build process can help assemble and coordinate the appropriate professionals around your project. Either way, completed plans are not required to begin the conversation.
Is a private consultation with Sweaney Custom Homes the right next step?
If you are seriously considering building a custom home, a private consultation is the best place to begin. It gives us an opportunity to understand your vision, property or land needs, priorities, desired timeline, and overall project goals while giving you an opportunity to understand how we work.
We’ll introduce our Master Builder and Integrated Design-Build approach, answer your initial questions, and help identify the appropriate next steps. There is no need to arrive with completed plans or every decision made. The purpose of the consultation is to determine the right path forward—and whether Sweaney Custom Homes is the right fit for your project.
